LUIGI GALLIGANI: TRADITION AND RENEWAL
Hugo Brutin

We have got acquainted with and started admiring Luigi Galligani's surprising sculptures in connection with a group-exhibition of Italian sculptors in the gallery of Henri Lannoye, who is an excellent and visionary sculptor himself, and later on account of another group-exhibition about the horse in art in the Ostend Wellington Hippodrome, where the Italian sculptor was one of the outstanding artists. His figures, mostly both elegant and impressive female beings, are at once striking because of a kind of identification that quickly disappears when coming nearby, literally and figuratively. The recognizable can be explained by the classical and almost antique figure and air of his dignified figures, his splendid horses, the features of a face, the sphere that is peculiar to refined drapings.
The peculiarity, the personal pictorial language, comparable to none, cannot be easily described, because it does not owe its unique character only to formal characteristics, but at the same time seems to be actuated by an obstinate vision in which emotions, a sensuality looking ethereally and with virtuosity and a sensible elan are fundamental data.
Most of his bronze sculptures that were on show in Kortrijk are goddesses not only referring to the classic antiquity, but also to an ideal picture in which beauty, youth, mystery, sensuality, physical rhythmic, air, power and slenderness form at once a seldom seen unit. His pictures have the style of a present-day pictorial language, the classical features referring to former attaintments, the symbolism of what deals with history and at the same time with femininity. They wade through wind, amalgamate with earth and rise out of an unexpected and wonderful dream.
